Tally Sheets

Tally Sheets are an excellent way to collect categorical data. Simply draw a table like this one, with your categories as headers for different columns. Then simply add a "check" or an "x" to indicate the number of times that category applies. As with any of the improvement tools described in this eManual, be sure to indicate the time and place where the data were collected, so even if the sheet gets "shuffled", you will still be able to use the data. An improvement on the example shown would be to mark four in a row, and then cross out the row with the fifth occurrence. This way, you will be able to tabulate more quickly by counting off groups of five.

Tally Sheet Example

This Tally Sheet clearly shows that the biggest problems are misalignment and defective parts. Possible solutions to these problems include developing or switching suppliers, and getting better equipment to handle the pace without causing so many poorly aligned parts. (Note, many continuous pace assembly lines produce excessively high rates of misalignments because operators must chase after their work while they perform their jobs.)
