Deployment Charts
When we have to implement our improvement plans, we must be able to coordinate the work of different people to achieve a common goal. One of the best ways to do this is with a Deployment Chart - which is a matrix used for planning. List the steps in the process down one side, and the team members along the top. Indicate who has primary responsibility, and who can advise and assist at each step. If a step in the process is so important that it needs everyone's sharp attention, then mark everyone as having primary responsibility for that step. Lines connecting different squares show simultaneous activity. Vertical lines are particularly telling, as they indicate where the process is "delinearized" to save time or coordinate more effectively. Create the diagram in the presence of the team who must be deployed. This way, everyone knows what they have to do, and who they can go to for assistance. Further colour-coding can indicate progress for each person reporting on each step. A simple chart like the one below can be "posted" on a computer network, and can provide everyone involved with a live "bulletin board"/ progress report, where collaboration can be enriched and deepened even further.
