Decision Charts

Use Decision Charts to map out a process with fine detail. For most purposes, this degree of detail is unnecessary, so only resort to this technique if other avenues to improvement have not produced progress. Occasionally, the investment of time and precision is worthwhile when the Chart can be used to offset other costs that are greater. For example, a Decision Chart can sometimes substitute for expensive and lengthy training. There are no rules about format. As with Top-down Flowcharts, you can increase its usefulness by adding colour, special symbols, operational definitions, specifications, instructions or other pieces of information that add to its usefulness. When designing your Chart, be aware that Westerners expect it to "unfold" from left to right and from top to bottom, as this is the way we read.
