Organizational Innovations for Modern Enterprise

10   The Voice of Dissent

THE NEW WAY: Get the critics to speak up.

Previous   |   Next
This new directive is set in the sincere desire for an ever-better organization. It demands that all members of an organization recognize that nothing we humans do is perfect, and that there is always room for improvement.

When every member of your company holds this to be true, they will be ready to collectively take responsibility for the improvement process, on all fronts of action. (Total Quality Improvement) This signals a major departure from the old way, when improvement was the exclusive responsibility of management.

In this new style organization, people are united by a shared desire to continually make things better. This can only occur when everyone feels a commitment and a loyalty to the truth. Of course, this will mean different things to different people at different times. But this is the strength of the new way, not its weakness.

When differing ideas and perspectives collide in a fair and open forum, the result is a deeper, stronger, shared understanding of reality and what can be done to improve it. (Team Learning) With this new understanding, companies can then create ever-better ways to produce products and provide services. By getting the critics to speak-up, and by listening to what they are saying, a company can discover how to renew itself constantly, so that it may serve its customers with ever-higher levels of excellence.
