Systemic Approach toward Structural Integrity

Senge reminds us that, "Dividing an elephant in half does not produce two small elephants." This is a reference to the fact that living systems have a natural, structural integrity. All living systems, including all organizations, are more than the sum of their individual parts. This principle of systems thinking is commonly understood when we remember the saying, "No man is an island unto himself." Likewise, no part of an organization exists in isolation of the other parts, or its environment. Moreover, no organization is self-sufficient or self-contained.

A failure to recognize this fact is the root cause of many business failures. Often, our inability to see the interconnectedness of wholes, leads us to misdiagnose our problems, misapply incorrect solutions, or simply miss opportunities and threats. This is why a systemic, or "holistic" approach is required in business and in other fields of human endeavour and relationships.

Senge, Peter. The Fifth Discipline: The Art and Practice of the Learning Organization. Currency- Doubleday. New York. 1990.

Easily one of the most important business books ever written, The Fifth Discipline is full of important lessons and insights which transcend the corporate context. Highly readable, very engrossing and even more comprehensive, Dr. Senge's landmark book lays the foundation for what he calls a "learning organization". He introduces readers to the five organizational learning disciplines -- systems thinking, personal mastery, mental models, shared vision, and team learning. He explains how these learning disciplines, when used together, can help organizations to renew themselves continuously, as they climb the learning curve. This book is essential reading for anyone in business -- bar none.
