Shared Vision Statements

Senge's landmark work "The Fifth Discipline" brings the practicalities of developing a shared vision statement into focus. He explains that an inspiring vision of a desired future, when formalized in writing, and shared between many people, becomes more tangible and real. It becomes attainable. This is why organizations must develop a shared vision of their intended future. Only when guided by a vision, can people sustain the energy and enthusiasm they need, to learn what they must, in order to make their vision come alive.

Only when the fulfillment of a vision dearly matters to someone, can they fully commit themselves to making it happen. For this reason, Senge writes that a true shared vision draws upon the individual personal visions of each and every member of the organization. This is the only way to enroll the commitment of people, and make a shared vision, a reality.

Senge, Peter. The Fifth Discipline: The Art and Practice of the Learning Organization. Currency- Doubleday. New York. 1990.

Easily one of the most important business books ever written, The Fifth Discipline is full of important lessons and insights which transcend the corporate context. Highly readable, very engrossing and even more comprehensive, Dr. Senge's landmark book lays the foundation for what he calls a "learning organization". He introduces readers to the five organizational learning disciplines -- systems thinking, personal mastery, mental models, shared vision, and team learning. He explains how these learning disciplines, when used together, can help organizations to renew themselves continuously, as they climb the learning curve. This book is essential reading for anyone in business -- bar none.
