Self Directed Work Teams |
|
| |
Volvo president Pehr G. Gyllenhammar explained one of the major rationales for self-directed work teams at Volvo. This rationale was rooted in their desire to abandon the use of assembly lines at the Kalmar plant. They thought that assembly workers could do a better job, if the product stood still while they worked on it. Indeed, the whole concept of the Kalmar plant was to give production teams more control over their work. The results of the Kalmar experiment are now in, and they are impressive by any measure.
