Senge describes the use of what he calls "mental models". A mental model is a set of assumptions that shapes our perceptions and opinions. By making our mental models explicit, we enable others to get a handle on our thinking. This allows those around us to contribute to our thinking and improve our perceptions, our opinions and therefore also our options together. The opportunity to truly understand and make a contribution is what brings out the full commitment of employees. This is in stark contrast to the political, bureaucratic view of companies which falsely believe "Great minds think alike."
