Management Control Systems Pose Constraints |
|
| |
In discussing equifinality, Katz and Kahn also point out one of the limits to equifinality. Organizations reduce their strategic options as they rely more and more heavily on control mechanisms to achieve coordination. In companies, this may mean having to get a series of signatures to do something, or having to convince different groups, committees or the Board of Directors of the value of some new course of action. These control mechanisms are the primary, self-induced tactical limits of organizational innovation. On a day to day basis, such regulating norms as standard operating procedures, quota systems and performance monitoring, act to restrict the continuous improvement of production systems, and therefore limit the options available for success.
