Parker shows that some of the most powerful motivational techniques around focus on developing "intrinsic motivation", and can be very low cost for employers. The idea here is not to motivate with some form of "carrots or sticks", which are decidedly external, or "extrinsic", but instead to foster an internal sense of motivation that arises from within employees themselves. Pride in one's work and a sense of organizational belonging are two key aspects of this intrinsic motivation. He explains the many ways that clear, multi-facetted, straightforward and democratic rewards systems can produce intrinsic motivation in employees. This motivation is above and beyond the externally-based motivation produced by the traditional reward and punishment approach.
