The Pitfalls of Internal Competition |
|
| |
Moss Kanter lists these and other pitfalls of internal competition. She reminds us that when different parties are interdependent in any way, that a strategy of cooperation and collaboration has all the advantages over a strategy of competition. She argues that business excellence in the next millennium will be made with internal cooperation, combined with fierce external competition.

Moss Kanter, Rosabeth. When Giants Learn to Dance: Mastering the Challenges of Competition, Strategy and Careers in the 1990's. Simon and Shuster. New York. 1989.
This is a down-to-earth and incisive examination of modern organizational behaviour theory. Moss Kanter examines the many threats and opportunities that organizations create for themselves. She also introduces the practice of "newstreams" -- innovation hot housing -- which is a way for companies to develop and implement winning strategies, without the strategic "steering" function of top management.

|
| |
With newstreams, top management controls the accelerator and the brakes, while cross-functional teams in close contact with customers, control the steering wheel. In this framework, management serves a resource allocator and support role for these newstreams, which take on many aspects of a separate venture. If innovation is important for your company, than this book is important for you.
