Employee Performance Standards

  Walton makes the point that in the old-style corporation, one which he identifies as using a high control strategy, performance expectations serve to define minimum standards. In this environment, when an employee is promoted, they receive the tacit message that "You have arrived." The motivation to excel is diminished. In the new-style corporation using a high commitment strategy, performance expectations are set that provide stretch objectives, emphasizing continuous improvement and customer satisfaction. In this environment, when an employee is promoted, they understand that what they have been given is an opportunity to make a bigger contribution.
