Extending Strategic Competencies

Carr, in discussing strategic competencies, reminds us that technologies should not replace the skill of critical, core competency employees. Rather, it should be used to support and extend this competency, rather than eliminate the need for it. Technology provides the greatest benefits when it is used to enrich and enhance the value adding capabilities of employees. Where technology is used to supplant the need for labour, it reduces both the strategic and tactical potential of the enterprise.
